The Artist’s profile
Michael Becker is a German jewellery artist renowned for his sculptural and architectonic designs that blend geometric precision with organic forms. Born in 1958 in Paderborn, Germany, Becker began his training as a gold and silversmith from 1975 to 1982. He then pursued studies in sculpture and precious metal design at the Fachhochschule Köln under Professor Skubic from 1982 to 1987.
Since 1988, Becker has operated his own studio in Munich, where he creates jewellery that often resembles miniature architectural landscapes. His work is characterized by severe, ascetic shapes, distinct lines, and a harmonious interplay of static and dynamic elements, exploring the tension between order and chaos.
Becker’s creations have been exhibited internationally, including at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His pieces are also part of esteemed collections, such as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The triggers to become an artist
My training as a goldsmith and the years spent working in various jewellery artists’ studios were very fulfilling. My goal then was to study at an art academy to learn new conceptual and design approaches. After studying in Cologne in the 1980s, I began working in my own studio in Munich, where I had the time to develop my ideas further, focusing on proportions and architecture to create jewellery that plays with movement, colour, and light in small spaces.
