The Artist’s profile

Carina Shoshtary, born in 1979 in Augsburg, Germany, is a contemporary jewellery and mask artist whose work explores the intersection between nature and artifice. Trained as a goldsmith and further educated at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Professor Otto Künzli, she crafts fluid, organic forms using bio-plastics and found or vintage materials. Nature serves as both muse and collaborator, inspiring designs that blur the boundaries between the natural and synthetic. Shoshtary’s work has been shown worldwide in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her pieces are held in public collections including the International Design Museum, Munich, Germany; the V&A, London, England; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA. Through her jewellery, she invites viewers to engage with the transformative potential of material and adornment.

The triggers to become an artist

“I never wanted to be anything other than an artist. The act of creating beautiful, intriguing objects with my own two hands has always felt like the most fulfilling thing I could do. I was drawn to making jewelry because of its size—there’s a special intimacy in crafting small, intricate pieces that immediately captivated me. Over time, I also grew to appreciate the transformative power of jewelry. A single piece can empower the wearer, offering them a way to express or even reinvent themselves.

Though one might think making jewelry would confine an artist, I’ve found the opposite to be true. Contemporary jewelry allows for incredible freedom. You can be a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, photographer, and a craftsperson—each discipline feeding into the next. The possibilities are endless, and I find great joy in that flexibility. The personal connection between the artist and the object, and ultimately the wearer, is something I treasure. Each piece carries a bit of the artist’s essence, and the idea that my work can touch someone else on such an emotional level is deeply meaningful to me.”

Environmental Concern

Carina Shoshtary is deeply committed to environmental responsibility by using almost exclusively sustainable materials. In her current series, the main material is PLA, a bio-plastic derived from renewable sources like corn and rice starch. She also incorporates reclaimed silver, as well as vintage and found objects, giving new life to discarded materials. Each piece is handmade and one of a kind, reflecting her dedication to craftsmanship while minimizing her environmental footprint. Through her work, she advocates for ethical production and thoughtful consumption in the future of art and fashion.
