The Artist’s profile
Mei Fang Chiang is based in Tainan, Taiwan, she holds an MFA in Metalwork and Jewellery from the Tainan National University of the Arts. During her studies, she specialised in aluminium anodising under the guidance of British artist Jane Adam. She has since dedicated her career to mastering this technique and currently holds related patents.
Her recent series explore the cycles of life and traces of memory in The Other Shore, and the coexistence of nature and man-made objects in The Hidden Trees. Her practice spans contemporary jewellery, spatial objects, and public art commissions, including recent collaborations with Taiwanese independent fashion labels.
She has received the Taiwan Craft Award and the Awards for Promising Talent at the ITAMI Muzeum.(JP) Her work is featured in Lark Books’ 21st Century Jewelry and held in the public collections of the Art Bank and the Gold Museum.

The triggers to become an artist
At school, I learned many ways of thinking and began to pay attention to the meaning and history behind materials. Compared to gold, silver, copper, or iron, aluminium, a material that only became widely used after the Industrial Revolution, lacked mythical or symbolic meaning, giving it a pale and cheap impression. I found it particularly special when I discovered that the anodising process could overturn this impression.
For me, the discovery that craftsmanship and knowledge could intertwine the historical development of materials with personal life experiences and transform them into new art forms deeply fascinated me. This fusion of human history and inner perception continues to inspire me today.
I devoted myself wholeheartedly to this exploration, and over the years, this path gradually led me onto what people call the path of an “artist.”

Environmental Concerns
In an era where industrial production can easily satisfy human needs, I strive to respond to the emotional and spiritual aspects of human life through my art.
Aluminium, a material I use extensively, is highly recyclable and an excellent sustainable resource. I also avoid overproduction through customisation. I hope to integrate artistic practice with environmental responsibility by examining my work from multiple perspectives, thus merging intention and action into one.
