The Artist’s profile
Daphne established her studio practice after leaving Middlesex University in 1980.
Metal is her language and she loves using oxidised or coated silver, and recycled gold. Colour is important in her practice and she often uses translucent stones in her work.
She is inspired by cities, architecture and art. She enjoys photographing buildings, construction and demolition sites. The photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher, as well as sculptures by Donald Judd, and numerous modernist painters are an inspiration.
Having grown up in Greece she attributes her love of making to her grandfather who was a poet, always surrounded by creative and inspiring people. Spending time with him, made her learn to appreciate materials, colours, and shapes. She was able to put all these early influences into practice after completing her design training.

The triggers to become an artist
I do not remember any time when I did not scribble and draw, but also when I did not perceive the world around me in terms of shapes and colours.
Art was my favourite escape at school, and I knew early on that this was the path I wanted to follow.
I came to London after the advice of a favourite Greek painter who suggested I spend a year in a Foundation course, where I fell in love with metal and three-dimensional design. I have been immersed in my practice since I graduated four years later and have never looked back.
Art was my favourite escape at school, and I knew early on that this was the path I wanted to follow.

Environmental Concern
Daphne has been using recycled gold for most of her career, preferring to melt down and alloy gold from either her old pieces or from clients’ jewellery handed down to her for bespoke pieces.
The stones she uses come from very small traders and are often antique.
Diamonds are also old, or from Asia and Australia.
She has always been conscious about how a lot of jewellery materials are mined, and sustainability has been important, long before it became a fashionable term.
