The Artist’s profile

Peleg Matityahu is an Israeli jewellery designer and goldsmith, having graduated in 2021 from Shenkar College of Art, Design, and Engineering in Ramat-Gan, Israel.

Her work is rooted in personal experience, particularly the loss of short-term memory following a head injury. This condition, known as Amnesia, inspired the Memory Holder series. In her pieces, Matityahu explores memory and its restoration, using materials that can be disassembled and reassembled intuitively. Through a laborious process of threading chains through plaster strips, she creates tactile, delicate yet durable works that symbolize the flow of memory, filling in the gaps to form a new, cohesive whole. Peleg’s jewellery represents both the conscious and subconscious processes of recovery, from oblivion to the creation of new memories.

The triggers to become an artist

In 2016, I began studying interior, building, and environmental design. However, a year later, I realised that many of my ideas would likely remain theoretical. Then, one day, a jewellery display caught my eye, and in that moment, I knew I had found my true calling. I was captivated by how such a small object could spark so much curiosity. The ability to bring my ideas to life with my own hands fascinated me. That’s when I decided to pursue jewellery design—a field that seamlessly blends everything I love: fashion, architecture, and art. For me, jewellery is more than adornment; it is a form of storytelling, a way to capture time and place, and a means of making statements about life’s most important issues. It is both a work of art and a deeply personal form of communication.

Environmental Concern

The designer believes that jewellery doesn’t have to be made from precious metals and gemstones. Instead, she creatively incorporates ready-made and recycled materials found in her workplace, reducing waste and highlighting the importance of reusing existing resources.
